What to pack
Altitude & acclimatization
- Spiti is very high altitude; mild headache, breathlessness, or fatigue can happen. Tell your trip captain early if you feel unwell—rest, slow down, and use support oxygen if offered on the vehicle.
- Drink water regularly (avoid excess alcohol) and eat light, warm meals; dehydration worsens altitude discomfort.
- Take the first days of the drive easy—avoid long strenuous hikes on arrival days so your body can adjust.
- Sleep well, dress in layers, and avoid sleeping pills unless your doctor approves—they can mask worsening symptoms at altitude.
- Carry personal prescription medicines and basic headache relief; use altitude medicines such as Diamox only if prescribed—do not self-medicate.
- If symptoms are severe or persistent (e.g. confusion, difficulty walking, chest tightness), seek medical help and follow the captain’s plan.
What to pack
- Layers: Thermal base layers, fleece or down mid-layer, and a windproof shell; temperatures swing between sun, shade, and cold nights.
- Hands & head: Insulated gloves, warm cap, and sunglasses—strong sun and wind at altitude.
- Feet: Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or light boots for village walks and uneven ground; spare dry socks.
- Rain & dust: Packable rain jacket and a neck gaiter or buff for dust on unpaved sections.
- Sun: High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a hat for when you are outside the vehicle.
- Day use: Comfortable daypack, reusable water bottle, power bank, and a small dry bag for electronics.
- Documents & cash: Valid ID, permit copies if you carry them, and some cash—ATMs can be unreliable in remote stretches.
- Luggage: Backpacks or duffels are strongly advised; rigid suitcases are harder to load and may attract porter charges.
